NAVY LEAGUE
A. mooting ■ of. the Executive Com-
mittee of the Wellington branch of the Navy League was held , on Monday afternoon, and was attended' by Messrs. . J. B. Harcourt (chairman), R. Darroch, A. F. Wiren, Colonel ,G. F. 0. Campbell, and Mesdames Bradney Williams and Hall Thompson, The hon. treasurer presented the report and audited balance-sheet of the British Dependants' Fund, wEich were approved and adopted. - A hearty vote of thanks was passed to' the treasurer tor his services, and great sKTsfaotion .was expressed at the very small cost at . ' whioh so largo a sum of money was collected. Votes of thanks were also passed to all those not oonnected with tho Navy League who assisted in promoting and worked in tho interests of the fund. ■ Mrs. Hall Thompson reported on the activities of the local ladies' auxiliary .branoh the branches at Marton, and in the Wairarapa. The country centres are doing excellent work, ana during .the past month Masterton branch has enrolled more than 200 members. _ A- sum of £100 has been transmitted from Masterton branoh to London-for the purpose of providing warm clothing for the men of, xhe lesser auxiliary fleet. It was also reported that Mrs. Lowry, ns president of the "Keep-on" League, had forwarded £40 for extra' comforts. The report of the hon. treasurer (Mr. -■It. Darroch) in connection' with the British Sailors' Dependants' Fund' showed that £9461 os. 2d', passed ■ through the offices of tlie : Mayor as .president.of the for which no charges were made. This means a con- ■ siderable saving 'in. postage and stamps for receipts.' No charges against..':the • account were made : by the league, and' the treasurer personally paid all postages and stamps for receipts which passed through his hands. The pointing, stationery, advertising, and goods expenses, amounting to £30 12s. Id., were in oonnection with Naval Day®, when over £800/ was: collected on the streets. Even these expenses were contracted before' thb Navy - League t-ook'over Naval' Day's collection from the Patriotic Society. There'were in other expenses no charge whatsoever. Through Mr.. Smith's offices, the league was saved a charge of £13 10s. for printing of circulars by The Dominion.
Mr. Smith was also responsible for a gift of 25)000 envelopes. The treasurer expressed his thanks to the president of the league, Mr. J. R. Palmer, and Miss Nightingale for their courtesyand kindness in connection with the fund; to Mr. Areas for auditing the accounts free of charge, and to the many sympathetic helpers for the fund throughout the Wellington provincial district. The receipts amounted to £13,317 16a. 7d., and the expenses to £31 lis. lid.
