BOWLING

RECORD ENTRIES FOR DOMINION TOURNAMENT. ■ The entries for the Dominion Bowling Association's Tournament closed on Monday night, but as the secretary (Mr. J. J. Roberts) gave bowlers the advantage of the evening mail tho number of the entries was not known until midday yesterday. Mr. Roberts' says that the entries are a record in each section—pairs, singles, and rinks— which means that tie tournament to commence on Monday, January 8, will, as anticipated, be the biggest and most important ever held in New Zealand. The number of entries received so far are:—Rinks, 136; pairs, 204; and singles, 209. These include entries from as far north as Auckland and as far south as Invercargill. Tho whole of the net proceeds of tho tournament will be handed: to the Patriotio Fund, Mid judging by the entries received it is anticipated that over £300 will bo handed over.

A clever and happily-conceived book, of Chri_stmas_ cartoons has just been issued, in which the travels and doings of the Prime Minister and Sir Joseph Ward form tho principal theme. Under the title_"The Twins Abroad," the unofficial history is amusingly mitten by Will Lawson, while the accompanying sketches and cartoons by W. Macbeth, a promising Wellington artist, show a remarkable skill in portraying the features and figures of these well-known Ministers. The frontispiece of the book depicts Mr. Massey, as Father Christmas, filling the boots of John I'ull with gutter and meat_ and other articles oi food; and there is a two-page drawing called "Thirteen of Them," which is a life-like cartoon group of the National Ministry. The military_ side of matters is. represented by caricatures of the Minister of Defence, Colonel Gibbon, and other well-known camp figures. There is only one serious pau;e in tho book, and that is occupied by verses entitled "Soldier Sons. Even here the happy note is struck. The b(,ok is a highly creditable production, and should make a novel and_ welcome gift to soldiers abroad and others. - ■
