_ The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Minister of Commerce, had intended to go to Christchurch last night to attend the wheat conference there to-day, but pressure of urgent business keeps him in Wellington.

Mr. F. AV. Mansfield, formerly Regis-trar-General, who retired from the Public Service recently on superannuation, was farewelled by the staff of the Registrar-General's Department yesterday morning." The Hon. G. AV. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, made a presentation to Mr. Mansfield from the staff (the gift was' a handsome writing desk), and eulogised very warmly his services as a publio officer. Mr. Russell wished him and his family long life, happiness, and prosperity. Mr. Mansfield, replying, said he had always found a wonderful_ spirit of cooperation among those with whom ha had been associated in the service, and he congratulated, tho Government on having appointed Mr. AV. AV. Cook as his successor.
A cablegram has just been received stating" that Corporal Harold. Blaokburne (of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade), eldest son of the Rev. John. Blackburno (Bulls), has been ordered into the officers' training camp, Oxford. He and five others were mentioned in dispatches for capturing a machincgun from the Germans in France.
At the end of tie year Mr. J, WSalmon, postmaster, Wellington South, will retire after forty-one years' service, the last sixteen of whioh he haa been in charge of the Newtown Post Office. .
Dr. Mason has returned to Wellington from Rotorua.
; Captain James Jones is at present seriously ill in the Wellington Hospital. Captain Jones is in command of the tug Pilot, and was formerly in asimilar capacity on the DuoheßS.
Members of the Women's Branch of the Royal Life Saving Sooioty made a presentation yesterday to Mr. Duthie, their chief instructor. Mr. G. S. Hill, who made the presentation on behalf of the branch, referred to the excellent work done by Mr. Duthie. His Grace Archbishop Redwood will to-morrow conduct an ordination service st Greenmeadows Seminary, when the following students will be ordained to the priesthood:—Cornelius Outtrim (Wellington), Dalton Campbell (Wellington), James Roche (Greymouth), Kevin M'Grath John Dowling (Wanganui). In addition to these Paul Kane (Timaru) will be ordained to the diacoriate and William Buckley (Wellington) to sub-diaconate.
Before dispersing on Monday evening, members of the City Council took the opportunity of expressing by resolution their appreciation of the very valuable and untiring service rendered to the citizens by the Mayor in his latest strenuous year of office, and of the splendid work done also by the Mayoress (Mrs. Luke). Councillors wished both Mr. and Mrs. Luke a happy New Year, and offered other seasonable good wishes, The Mayor thanked the councillors for the compliment, and reciprocated tie good wishes.
Lieutenant W. F. Brothers, vho has been awarded the Military Medal, for service in the field, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Brothers, of Ngongotaha, near Rotorua. Lieutenant Brothers won his decoration while 3ergeant in. charge of a machine-gun section in. France. He has a long record of meritorious service, having left New Zealand with the Main Body as a private. He has taken part in all the fighting, and was slightly wounded on Gallipoh.
■ Mr. H. H. 6. Ralfe, c'erk of He Magistrate's Court in Auckland, will retire from the Government service on superannuation early in the New Year. Mr. Ralfe has been granted three months' leave of absence as from Maroh 1, on which date ho will cease bis official duties. It is his intention to make his home, after retirement, in-the Nelson district.-.
The Rev. A. H. Colvile, "icar of St. Mary's, New Plymouth, has leen. appointed vicar of St. Sepulchre's, Khyber Pass Road, Auckland, in succession to the Rev. A. Richards, who is returning to England.. -
Mr. George Kenning, of .Auckland, is on a visit to Wellington, and is staying at the Grand Hotel.
