ONSLOW AFFAIRS
The Onslow Borough Council met last evening. There were present: Mr. C. C. Crump (Mayor), and Councillors J. G. Smith, W. Appleton, C. JBowden, H. Brenton-Rule, L; A. Browne, A. W. C. Palmer, and A. E. Budd. The defectiveness of the vater mains was before the meeting, and after a lengthy discussion it was decided that tho engineer should make a preliminary inspection and report, his finding to tho council. ; The Hokitika Borough Council wrote forwarding a copy of a resolution supporting the enforcement of tho Military Service Act. The council unanimously adopted tho resolution.' Tho pay of single men in the Motor Boat Patrol Service was the subject of a circular from tho Petono Borough Council. The N.Z. Government supplements tho pay of married men in the sorvico so that they receive pay equal to that of members cf tho N.Z. Forces. Single men are not in receipt of any subsidy, and tho motion passed by tho Petono' Council called upon the Government to grant tho difference ju the pay of tho single men in the N.Z. Forces and in tho Patrol Service. Tho council agreed to assist the Petone Council in their schemo should anything further bo done in the maUor. Councillor Bowden introduced'a motion to the effect that the council should consider tho advisability of acquiring its own means of cartage. Opinion on the matter was divided, sp a committee was appointed to inquiro into details.
