SOLDIERS' GRAVES

A SPECIAL RESERVATION

PROPOSAL ADOPTED

A proposal that a special roftrvation be made in Karori cemetery for soldiers' paves was adopted by tho City Council fast night, pa tho recommendation of Ilia committee which has control of the cemetery. Tho idea emanated oiiginally from tho Women's National Rtservo.

Tho following was the reconimenda.tion of the committee v.hich was adopted:— "That they havo adopted tho report of a sub-committee, consisting of Councillors Bush and Veitch, set lip to investigate,and report on the proposal of the Women's National Reserve (Wellington -Branch) for the establishment of a special ground for the burial of soldiers. Tho ground recommended for selection lies to the east of the main roadway in tho Karori cemetery, on the riso just south of the crematorium. The committee recommend that siich ground bo reserved for tho purposo ruined, but that tho operation of such icheme should not be undertaken until immediately after tho termination of the war. .The soldiers should be buried in the ground of their respective faiths, and upon tho termination <if tho war reinterment of the remains can bo made in the special ground (which will bo suitably laid out) and space reserved for an appropriate memorial (which wouldprpbablybe raised by public subscription). This proposal should operate for a period of three jtars fiotn the termination of the war.

"In the event of the council adopting the above scheme, the committee tccommend that the resolution of the council passed on October.s, 1916, to the_ effect that soldiers' graves be individualised and the plots given to the relatives of the deceased, should not be. given effect to, as the above proposal, in the committee's, opinion, is more comprehensive and satisfactory,."
