CIVIL SERVICE HOLIDAYS
PROBABLY NO ANNUAL LEAVE IN 1917. Owing to the possibility of having, temporarily, to abandon, the practice* of granting annual leave to, members of the Public Service, the Government, has agreed to allow as many officers' as possible to observe holidays from Saturday next, December '23, to Tuesday, January 2 (inclusive). This will afford an opportunity of as many aa possible enjoying a holiday at the festive season. Arrangements will bo made for those who are called on t« work during that period to get equivalent leave at some other time. This step, it is understood, has been taken owing to the marked shortage of staff in some Departments. _ Enlistments from the Civil Service have, naturally; been very heavy, but a further depletion is'now taking placein the calling up of the First Division men. With the calls thajb will be mad<t during the coming year it would be a, difficult mattor to give annual leave as has been the case in the past, so the' Government is doing what is next best—providing a ten days' holiday at Christmas and the Now Year.
