BRILLIANT COUP NEAR VERDUN GREAT CAPTURE OF PRISONERS AND GUNS CAMPAIGN BRITISH OFFENSIVE OPERATION iPEACi PROPOSALS • RECEPTION IN ALLIED CAPITALS ; The French have W6n a brilliant success in the Verdun area, ef the Meuse. Attacking on a front of half a dozen miles, they' penetrated the German front to a depth of nearly two miles, capturing'nine thousand prisoners and 81 guns. From the standpoint of loss and damage to the enemy the battle is one of the most important fought since the Allied offensive opened. Another notable item of news relates to Mesopotamia, where the British have resumed the of- ■ fensive. after months devoted to the improvement of transport and other services which formerly fell much short of requirements. Railways have been built, and other notable improvements effected. In the operations now reported, the Turks have already suffered heavy defeat, and Kut-el-Amara appears to be imminently threatened with capture or envelopment. In Romania the enemy is again vigorously pressing bis offensive, and has captured Buzeu, and the Rumanians are retiring, under pressure, to.wards the confines of Wallachia. ' It is reported that the Allied Ministers have left- Athens in terms of the re- f cent ultimatum stating that relations would be broken off failing sub--1 mission to the Allied demands in regard to the disposition of the Greek Royalist forces, satisfaction ,for the treacherous attack, at Athens and other matters; . -•
