Major Bartlett and Capt. Oram and staff left for Auckland last evening to meet the soldiers who are returning hy the Maheno. '■ The Roman Catholio ohaplain on the hospital ship Maheno, when she leaves Not Zealand, will he the Rev. Father Conolly, of Taihapo. Mr. James Macintosh, who has been in. the Bowen Street Hospital for some time, has recovered from his illness, and left for the south on Sat-urcby evening. ; The death is announced of Mr. J. J. Ramsay, proprietor of the "Alexandra Herald," and at one time a member of the Otago Education Board. A very prominent figure -will be missed from-financial circles in Canterbury when Mr. Alexander Ferguson re-, tires, toward the end of February, from the position of manager of the National Bank of New Zealand at Christchuich. Fifty-two years ago' lilr. Ferguson joined the staff of the British Linen Bank, one of the oldest banks in Britain, and he was in that bank's service in the North of-Sootland for some three years. In 1868 he joined! the Oriental Banking Corporation in London. For a time subsequently Mr. Ferguson was engaged in mercantile pursuits in Liverpool, but in February, 1874, he joined the National Bank 'of New Zealand in London, so that when lie retires he will have been in that bank's service for 43 years. Coming to New Zealand in 1877, Mr. Ferguson was for a little while on the Christchurch staff, but in 1878 he was appointed manager of the Balclutha branch.. In 1880 he was transferred to Timaru, and in 1885 he removed to Christchurch, where he has been ever since except for a trip to the Old Country. When Mr. A. Macintosh retired from the position of auditor of the Bank of New the late Mr. R. J. Seddoii offered' that position to Mr. Ferguson, but as the latter was then contemplating making a trip Home he did not see his way to avail himself of the opportunity. Mr. Ferguson will be 6iicceeded by Mr. C. J. Ronaldson, who is now manager of the. Invercargill branch. The new manager of the Invercargill branch will be Sir. F. S.. Seamoh, who is at present on the bank's inspecting staff. '

On Saturday morning a gathering of the staff of Messrs. Roberts (N.Z.), Ltd., met at the warehouse to present their manager, Mr. C. H. Neville, with a framed photograph of the staff in appreciation of the high esteem in whichMr. Neville is held. The presentation was made by Mr. R. G. Boss on behalf of the staff.
The death occurred on Friday last, at the Albion Hotel, Courtenay Place, of Mr. John Wm. Campbell, son of Mr. John Campbell, of Rintoul Street. The late Mr. Campbell was well known in 'Wellington, and a few years ago was a prominent Rugbyfootballor. For some time ho was a "hotelkeepcr atPicton, and ho was also in business in Havelock and Apiti. Mr. Campbell leaves a wife, the second daughter of the lato Mr. P. M'Ardlc, and one child.
