EDUCATION BOARD

LAST MEETING OF THE YEAR: • Tho Hon. -J. G. W. Aitken (chairman). Messrs. J. Kebboll, A. W. Hogg, R. A. Wright:, M.P., T. Forsyth, T. Moss, E. li. Penny, G. London, W. H. Field, and W. Allen were present at the monthly meeting of tho Wellington Education Board yesterday. Tho financial statement showed an amount of £12,445 6s. 7d. -for the December pay-sheet, and £2558 14s. sd. for the general account, leaving a credit balance of £2181 (is. 7d.. as against £2331 16s. lOd. last year. Tho receipts for December amounted to £12,595 16s. 10d., and the payments to £12,445 6s. 7d. Authorisations for sites, etc., amounted to £3823 4s. 9d. A notice of motion by Mr. W. Allen, advocating tho. raising of the age limit in country schools, was adjourned until tho first meeting of the board next year. A letter was received from tho Government intimating "that subsidies on Trust Lands trust donations would be granted, subject, in each case, to compliance with the regulations as to the purposes to which money will be devoted."

Another Government communication w-as received pointing out tho provision made for appeals' under the Military Service Act. When this was before tho board, the chairman stated that lie thought it well for the board to givo it out, that as a board, they did not intend, to take advantago of the Appeal Board. He moved accordingly, and it' was passed unanimously without any discussion. On this subject the Island Bay School Committee wrote, approving of a non-appeal policy by the 'board. A letter was received from the Taranaki Education -Board, containing a proposal to make representations to the Government re better provision of educational facilities for back-blocks settlements. _ ' . On the motion of the chairman it was deqided to approve, and forward a suitable reply. Speaking for tho executive, the chairman said that tho matter of providing hot-water services for teachers' residences had been gone into. It would' cost a sum of £1426 to do them all. The recommendation tho executive would make was to so provide all the schools (23) in tho No. 1 district at a cost of £715. The board approved. , The next meeting of tho board will be' held on Wednesday, January 31.
