WELLINGTON COLLEGE
ANNUAL SPEECH DAY THE SCHOOL'S PROUD RECORD The annual speech day and prize distribution ceremony look place at Wellington Collego yesterday. There were no prizes, however. The boys received certificates only, the money wiiich would ordinarily have gone for the purchase of prizes having been applied to patriotic purposes. The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, chairman of the College Board of Governors, presided. The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken congratulated all boys on the or a year's work, and especially those who had worked with diligence. Ho was careful to say that very many boys who lad worked hard would not win prizes, and to these he offered encouragement to continue their earnest work. The Roll of Honour. Mr. J. P. Firth, principal of the college, delivered an address, in which he referred chiefly to the part played in the war by old boys of the school. "The whole life of the school," said Mr. Firth, "has been overshadowed by the war. The large number of our. old boys who have volunteered for service gives ns, as it were, a personal and private interest, in addition to the broader one of patriotism. •We have 1275 old boys in the Forces; 101-have fallen, and 130 more have been wounded or invalided to hospital. ''The following special distinctions have been won:—

Mr. Firtli called tc the boys': "I want you to show 'Jimmy., Stainton that you haven't forgotten how to cheer." I'ho response was immediate. .Every on his feet on tho instant, and the cheers were—such cheers as schoolboys can givo on speech day. "We know, we aro proud- to know," Mr. Firtli continued, "that whether in tho sea or on the soa, intlio air on in the trenches, sticking it in mud or unspeakable filth, or leading a desperate cliarge, our old boys luivo borne themselves greatly. The School Spirit. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) paid a tribute to tho very fine men who had passed through tho college, and had gone to fight in this war. He had been particularly interested in the college. He had three boys serving with tho dolours. They had. all been at Wellington Collego, and they had told him in their letters that tho training they had had in AVellington College had established for them standards of conduct by which they strove to live while on service.
