GLIMPSE OF A DESPERATE NATION
There is still very little news from the'great war fronts. In Rumania, Russian cavalry . and infantry have been in action in a heavy ■"■j battle with .the Germans, and as, the result is .not stated the conflict '• presumably is still in progress. Lord llobert-Cecil, in the House of Commons, has intimated t'iat fresh demands are to .be made upon Greece in order,to clear up the present unsatisfactory situation. Local actions continue to - -be the distinguishing feature of the winter campaigning in the West. The German peace offer still engrosses the public and the German people. To-day's dispatches afford a glimpse of .a starving and war-sick nation, eagerly scanning the newspapers for some sign of the Allies accepting the offer to discuss peace. Apparently what the Germans want is a round table conference, but the methods of the Huns as belligerents have engendered a rooted suspicion of their motives in all things. Russia regards the offer as a. trap. Britain's reply is clear and uncompromising. We will not descend one-inch from, the stand'wo took up when Germany forced the war on Europe. ■ ' '
