The well-known Hastings horseman, L. Wilson, has been engaged to ride Marc Antony in the Auckland Cup.
So far nothing is inown definitely as to whether The Toff will take his place in the Auckland Cup field, but, judging by certain happenings yesterday, it is very evident that some people expect tho Derby winner to start on the opening day. If this proves to be correct, C. Emerson, who is retained by Mr. G. L. Stead, will take the mount, and another rider will/have to be found for Ardenvohr.
R. J. Mason is the first of the Riccarton trainers to leave for Ellerslie, and he will arrive here this morning with Bimeter, . Greenstreet, Biplane, and Thames. R. CDonnell, with Tho Toff, Wishful,, Koesian, Bon d'Or, Ample, Red Rock, and Plymouth, and W. H. Thomson, with Marc Antony are expected on Friday, and H. Cutts will follow on Sunday with Flying Start, San Sebastian, Good Hope, Claverhouse, and Full Speed. . ''
Splendid acceptances have been received for the Waipa Racing Club's Meeting, which takes place at Te Awamutu on Saturday. The Cup has drawn a field of nine, and includes the Auckland Cup candidates, Lady Penury, 9st., and Depredation, Sst. 71b.
The Auckland District Committee are keeping a strict eye on the riders licensed by them, and quite recently a horseman well up in his profession was given a warning regarding his tipping propensities.
Tararu Jack has been withdrawn 'from, the Grafton Hurdles, to be run on tho opening day of tho Auckland Cup Meeting.
Recently the Auckland stud-master, Mr. H. It. MacKenzie,; announced that one of Mr. Greenwood's ' mares, , after foaling a dead foal, had produced a live colt foal to Danube, some days after, and word to that effect was sent Mr. Greenwood. Since then, howeveT, certain happenings have given tho. impression that the maro in question has stolon the foal of Delania. The latter mare ws due to foal to Elysian somenhero about tho same time and though- sho gave every evidenceioi having done so so trace of her offspring confi bo discovered. Tho foal running with Mr. Greenwood's maro is pronounced by experts to be a typical Elysian, without any resemblance to Danube, and probably tho theory that the mare took .Dclania's foal will bo found to bo tho correct ono.
At the Bay of Plonty Meeting on Saturday tho Tauranga Cup, ono milo and a quarter, was won by St. Francis, with Gold Lac and King of tho Valley in tho places. The Auckland-owned Tenacious was favourites but finisned last. Later in the day, Gold Lao was successful in the Borough Handicap. Sfc Francis also camo out later on, and appropriated tho milo hack race. Other horses to win a double were Arty and Kauri King. J. Conquest rodo four wj.nnors during the afternoon, and H. Robinson rodo two.
R. Woolton, who already has a number of English-bred horses in Australia, purposes sending out tho five-year-old Sue Sera (Dark Ronald—Broom), whoso last win was in the Bretby Wolter Handicap, at Newmarket, a few weeks ago. Tho Grafton gelding, Two Lights, owned by Mr. M. C. O'Comiell, of Masterton, scored his seoond win in Victoria at the Bendigo Meeting last month. A week later ho was made favourite in tho Second Division at Trentone, but shortly after tho start his ridor broko a leather, and had to pull tho horeo up.
Latest report at Ellorslie is to tho effect that J. O'Shea. wilL bo found riding Blackall, and R. Reid Depredation, in the, Auckland Cup.
The Riccarton light-weight apprentice, G. Clarke, has been offered tho mount on Altercation in tho Anokland Cup.
Reports from Auckland state that Mullingar has had a recurrence of bleeding troubles, and it is feared that this will prejudice his prospect of success at tho Summer Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club.
St. Francis, winners of the ■ Tauranga Cup ou Saturday last, is engaged in the Te Awamutu Cup, with the minimum impost. He was credited with running the ten furlongs at Tauranga in 2min. 9 4-5 sec, with 7st. 301b., so, with a stono off his back, he should have a great chanco at tho Waipa Meeting.
A Press Association telogram from Auckland states that Sedd-ul-Bahr was withdrawn from all his engagements at the Auckland Summer Meeting at 11.15 yesterday.
In England in October, Mr. James Buchanan wished to match his colt Hurry On against Pommorn, at a milo and a half, or further, for JCoflOfl a-side. Mr, Buchanan added that if tho match! took place, and his horss won, lie would giro tho proceeds to the Ked Cross Fund,
