DISCHARGED SOLDIERS

Tho following progress statement of the work of the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department as at December 11 is mado available by the Minis-ter-in-Cliarge (Hon. A. L. Hcrdman): — Total number of men on register:— (a) Disposed of, 5269; (b) Tinder action, 471; (c) not ready for action (including men returned by recent transports, 272; total, 6012. Particulars showing how cases dealt with:—

(a)lC'ases disposed of: Men who have, work to return to, and djch who have re-enlisted or returned to military duty, etc., 2231; men placed in employment, 1240; men who have signed "assistance not required," 1186; left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 152; men who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who have accepted work the Department found for them but failed U start work, 460; total, 5269. (b) Cases under action:—Reportß upon cases not yet returned by officers making inquiries, 105; awaiting further advice (including men who have stated tbat they are not yot ready for work), 240; at present on employment wanted register, 126; total, 471. (o) Oases not ready for action: Men convalescing, not ready for employment, and not yet discharged by tho military authorities, 272. Grand total, 6012.
