NEW YORK REPORT. ln. their latest report from New York Messrs. Ma-iller and Quereau state:—'"There appears to be a great scarcity of ciu'eo offering for all the Australian and New Zealand ports, end steamers loading are finding gre.it difficulty in securing sufficient, to fill. This delays the steamers on tlm londi'it berths for long periods, oinl it Is difficult to know -when they will he dispatched with any definiteuess. Charter cost of steamers is again advancing as our winter season approaches, and the outlook is for higher cost when steamers are taken. This has had the effect of making all the lines extremely firm in their freight rates, and no enncep. sions of ally nature are entertained. We arc hopeful that there will lin no necessity for advancing freiTllt rates on merchandise, as they are in many instances now 100 large to permit of much export. trad». The topnanre ofTorin<r is ample for (ill the cargo, and some of the steamers will no doubt have tib" advanced beyond their announced dates."
