A DILATORY TUNNEL

PROTEST FROM TAUMAR-UNUI. By Telegraph—Press Association. Taumarunul, December 8. 'A meeting of settlors at Okahukura have raised an indignant protest over the slowness of the work in the tunnel, which is delaying tho opening of the line between the Main Trunk and Ohura. The tunnel was pierced nine months ago, and since then, only 15 chains out of 75 have been broken down and concreted. At this rate it -will take four years to complete. The opinion is expressed that tho contract s.vstom at this end is a failure. On the other hand, -work is proceeding satisfactorily on the_ Stratford section under the co-oporative system. 'The settlers are annoyed, because money earmarked for the works four years ago is being spent freely on the Stratford section and not here., A resolution was carried unanimously, calling npon the Minister of Public Works and the Acting-Prime Minister to waken up to the settlers' want of a railway which was promised thirteen years ago. The Prime Minister, when in the district three years ago, promised completion of the line to Mahere, ten miles from the Main Trunk

line. The line would tap some of the richest grazing lands in tho Dominion.
