Per favour of the Marino Department a copv of tho 1917 edition of the Nauli- . ca! Almanac, ha.s como to hand. This valuable annual has been revised and brought up to date in every particular by Captain H. P. Blackburiic, - of the Marine Department, and the purposes of the work arc to give as accurately as possible tidal predictions for the Dominion harbours, and to supplement the "New Zealand Pilot" by additional information which has been received from the marine harbour authorities about the principal ports, as well as other information, and warnings about recent changes on any part of the New Zealand eaast, nnd also the computation of the tides, which has been made under the superintendence of Mr. C. B. Adams. Government Astronomer of the N.Z. lands Department. Besides the Nautical Almanac, tide tables and supplementary information, some very valuable nautical tables and examples of problems worked by their-aid have been published in- the almanac, and it is hoped that this will greatly encourage masters and officers generally to make a practice of determining the ship's position from two stars at twilight, as there tables make the problem very easy in all. Infinite care has been taken to ensure accuracy in these tables. A few previously published tables useful to mariners and travellers generally have been reprinted, and courses and distances between all the principal ports in New. Zealand are given, ns n-01l as numerous charts mid plans. The work is a very valuable one for all concerned.
