NOTES AND COMMENTS

!Bv Glencoe.l Tho acceptance for tho Auckland Cup is disappointing, as only fiftoea owners havo paid up'for tho big money. This number is likely to bo further reduced, as The Toff and Marc Antony aro spoken of as unlikely starters. Owners havo responded hotter in tho open sprint, in which twenty-four horses have had their engagements continued, and as in past years this event promises to bo hard to win. Mr. W. G. Stoad has paid up for Shrill, who may bo ono of the favourites on tho day. During tho running of tho Trial Plato at the Hororata races on Saturday, Field Blue ran oft tho course and got amongst the trees, with tho result that tho jockey, J. Campbell, sustained a fracture of an arm and injury to a leg. Ho was brought to Christchlirch by motor car and admitted to tho hospital. Pohehe, winner of tho Maiden Raco on the second day at Feiiding, is a I'our-year-old gelding, bred by Mr. I. G. Duncan, being by Achilles or Bezonian from Mallaig by Clanranald—Happy Valley, by Wallace—Faraway, by Bill of Portland—Happy Valley, so that ho comes from the same-family as Crowhursl, winner of tho Wcllesley Stakes this season. Tho acceptance of Marc Antony for tho Auckland Cup comos as something of a surprise, for, according to recont arrangements, the Dunedin Meeting was to claim his attention.

It is probablo that Sir Geo. Clifford r will havo four representatives at tho u Auckland Racing- Club's Mooting, but < so far tho members of tho team havo " not been definitely decided on. Tho four-year-old Wishful, by Boni- ' form—Drought, was nuido tho medium of somo solid support for tho Auckland Cup ] last week, and the Yaldhmst horse is now ono of tho favourites for that event. The following aro the entries for tho Manawatu Cup:—Roso Pink, Taringamutu, Goldstream, .Montana, Bon Hove, Master Lupin, Orleans, Sedd-el-Bahr, Rinaido, Client, Indigo, Square Deal, j Devotion, Master Moutoa, Bronk Delaval, Maniaroa, Want, Cleft. The New Zealand-bred gelding Glenfinnan, by Clauranald—Lady Annie, changed hands in Melbourne recently at 115gns. When at his best Glenfinnan was a smart galloper, but he was not always in the humour, and since, he has been in Australia, a period of more than two years, ho has only won two small races. Mullingar's name was omitted from tho published list of acceptances for the Auckland Cup, but it is understood that Mr. Haud's representative has made tho payment, and will see the post. Reports from the south state that tho ■ well-known hurdle horseman, G. Fielding, has been called to tho colours. The Woodvillo District Jockey Club's Summer Meeting will bo hold on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. It is evident that Mr. G. L. Stead intends to leave no 6tone unturned to win tho Great Northern Derby. Ho has continued tho engagement of The Toff and Bon d'Or, and tho lattor's special mis- j 6ion will be to set a' fast pace, which j will suit tho C.J.C. Derby winner. j Principal interest at the Woodvillo t Meeting will centre in the appearance 1 of tho Auckland Cup candidates, I Chortlo, Blackall, and Bjorneborg, who 3 aro engaged in the big handicap on the j opening day. The top-weight, Chortle, ] 9st. 131b., has been set a big task, but if he has a chance in tho Auckland Cup he wall be able to show up in this event. "The dißtanco may not be far enough for Blackall, who is a great stayer, _ but Bjorneborg has his Wanganui Guineas form to recommend him. Alteration, who is to represent J. ] George in the Auckland Cup and Great Northern Derby, has an engagement in < the Maiden Plate at Woodvillo. The absence of Kilboy's name from any of the weight-for-age events at Ellerslie would make it appear as if. the breakdown of the Kilbroney colt is moro serious than was at first expected, and ( he will probably be given a lengthy 6pell. Amongst those nominated for the /Marden' Plate at Woodvillo is the KaTamu two-year-old Hymestra. This young- 1 ster, who is engaged in the Foal Stakes at Ellerslie, finished third in the Electric Plate at Riccarton last month. As usual, several owners have overlooked the forfeits for the weight-for-age t events at Ellerslie. Amongst the horses, not'likely to be taken north are Devotion, Elation, Probation, and War Star. . The Brisbane Summer Gnp, states a Press Association message, was won by * Garries, with Nojali and Outrage in the second > and third places. FIXTURES. ] Dec. fi and 7-Woodville District J.C. . .
