THE ATTACK ON BUCHAREST
VIOLENT BATTLE REPORTED EXCITING DAY AT ATHENS SHOTS EXCHANGED WITH RESERVISTS KING CONSTANTINE CLIMBS DOWN IR. LLOYD-GEORGE RESIGNING The news from the Rumanian theatre, grave enough in all conscience, is brightened by a ray of hope that illumines the situation. With the enemy almost at tho gates of the Rumanian capital, and to all intents and purposes developing » victorious campaiga, Brusiloff haß struck at tho northern gate to Transylvania, with the object, it is inferred, of cutting in behind Von Falkenhayn. Tho critics do not hold out much hope for Bucharost, but that, it is pointed out, will bo a detail if the driving force of Brusiloff can restore tho situation in Transyhania. There has been an esoiting day at Athens, where street fighting has occurred between tho Allies' landing parties and the Greek Reservists. A general out-, break has been only averted by an eleventh-hour derision by the Greek King and his Government to hand over the guns and munitions. Even as it was, some "local actions" took place, and the fleet bombarded certain positions held by the Tefractory element. Tho Athens public were thrown into a state of panic. There are conflicting reports df the movements ~<3T iho Greek army, which is, according to 6ome, at present on its way to attack tho Allies in rear. There has been some sharp fighting on the Sorbian front in the. Balkans, in which the enemy has suffered sevorely. No. material developments have ocourred in the other main theatres. There are ■various reports of a British Cabinet reconstruction, and a revision of the War Council, with a view to closer concentration and loss diffusion of energy.
