NOTES AND COMMENTS

!Br Glencoe.7

It is advertised in this issue that en. tries for nil events at the Stratford meeting close on Wednesday next. There are four open events on the programme. Depredation has been entered for the Waipa meeting, which points to the Campfire house being kept in Auckland for the Cup meeting. Weights for the Manawatu meeting will be declared at the conclusion of the racing at.Woodvillo. Nominations for all events at the Marton meeting close on Friday next. Some weeks ago Goldstream was under offer to a southern buyer, but the price asked did not lead to business. Guiding Way put up a great performance at the Takapuna meeting, where ho won all four hurdle races. The black gelding is now a most proficient jumper, and he may get on tho winning list again at the Ellerslie Aeet'ng. It does not appear as if tho two-year-olds this season are anything out of tho common. At Biccarton Tete-a-Toto easily accounted for Biplane, who was regarded as the best two-year-old at the meeting, and at Feilding this week the Wellesley Stakes winner, Crowhurst, failed to gain a place in the Feilding Stakes. At tho Feilding meeting, C. Emerson and C. Price each rode three winners. The first-named is now well ahead of his rivals'in the winning jockeys' list, and already he has ridden thirty winners. The withdrawal of Kilboy from the Auckland Cup did not come altogether as a surprise, for the Derby winner has been troubled in one of his shoulders. The scratching of Kilboy for the Auckland Cup will cause Blackall and John Barleycorn to further harden in the market. The first-named is now at a vary short price, and in recent years there has not been such a warm favourite at this stage for the big event at Ellerslie. The bay colt Elation has been suffering from a bruised heel lately, and ho is not likely to be seen out at the Woodville meeting. There will be racing at Hororata today. Amongst tho runners in the Cup are Thames (G. Clark) and Recorder (C. Emerson). The last-named will also ride Eormolu in the Trial Handicap, Peronilla in the Haldon Stakes, and Finboy in the Brackensdale Handicap. The many friends of Mr. Geo. Morse, the well-known handicapper, will icgret to hear that owing to ill-health ho was. unable to be present at the Takapuna meeting on Saturday. The weights for the second day's racing were' compiled :&y Mr. R. Wynyard. The Yaldhurst stable will be quite deserted during the holiday season. Seven horses liave been engaged at Ellerslie for tho Auckland Racing Club's meeting. Tho team wh;ci> It. O'Donnell intends to take north will consist of The TolT, Wishful, Bon d'Or, Koesian, Ample, Bedrock, and Plymouth. The first-named six competed at Riccarton last month, while Plymouth is an Australian-bred hurdler, who met with an accident after being brought here a little over a year ago.' Mr. G. L. Stead may send Recorder to tho West Coast, failing which she will go to the Brackenfield stud for a spell, in company with her two-year-old halfbrother, Perform. The. three-year-old filly Halina, by Varco—Temba, was i thrown out of work some time ago, and ! has gone to Mr. J. B. Reid's stud at Elderslie. This completes the Ynldhurst team, so that the stables.will be empty during the holidays. The Canterbury sportsman, Mr. H. Taylor, returned from Sydney on Wednesday by the Riverina, bringing with him 13ee and Zuland, both of whom claim engagements at the Auckland meeting. The hurdlers Kooya and Diavolo wero also brought back on the same steamer by Mr. P. Neagle. _ 'it is a somewhat strange coincidence that neither of the winners of the big handicaps at TuUapunii—Soldier and Pacific Slope—aro engaged in the Auckland Cup. FIXTURES.
