A Press Association telegram from Sydney records the deatli in Loudon of. Mr. T. J. West, pioneer of the "movies" in Australasia. It is announced officially that'Cap.fcaiii .(Temporary Major) "Williani Kington Fyffe is to be. temporary lieuten-ant-colonel whilst holding the appointment of Assistant Director of Medical Services, "Wellington Military District, vico the Hon. Colonel W. E. Collins, of the hospital ship Maraina.' '/ The members present at the annual meeting of tho Y.M.C.A. passed a resolution congratulating the Hon. J. GW. Aitkon on his election as Moder-ator-Designate of the Presbyteriau General Assembly. It was mentioned that in, tho history of tho" Presbyterian 'Church there had only been three- lay-; men elected as Moderator, Mr. Aitkeii making tho fourth. Captain Robert Haldane Makgill, M.8., M.S'., has been granted the temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel in tho New Zealand Expeditionary Force whilst holding the appoinment as Assistant Director of Medical Services— Sanitary, Tho Rev. Dean Regnault, of Christchurch, is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. J. H. Gunson, Mayor of Auckland, who has retired from, the agricultural seed business, has been presented with a handsome piece of plate by tho Auckland seed merchants. Mr. H. H. Allen, agricultural scienoo master at the Waitaki Boys' High School, has been offered the directorship of the Government experimental farm connected with the Ashburton Boys' High School, reports an exchange. The appointment includes the •position of master- in- agricultural science at the high school... . On Thursday at the. warehouse of Messrs. Abbot, Oram and Co., Corpl. N. C. L. Irons, a member of the staff, who leaves with"the Twentieth Reinforcements, was presented with, a cheque from his employers by' Mr. Abbot aii.d a coViplete smoker's- outfit from his fellow employees by ' Mr. •Castle, as tokens of esteem from both firm and associates.. . ' . . . ■ . Mr. Alan Cohen, (youngest son of Mr. M. Cohen, Palmerston North, and nephew of Mr. D. J.' Nathan ..- Wellington) is leaving' as .a gunner with the next Reinforcements.^. By the death of Mr. Peter Cheyno, ot Lisnoe Avenue,. Auckland, in 'his '90th year, the Dominion has lost an early settler who was at one time a prominent schoolmaster. Mr. Cheyno was born at Aberdeen in 1827, and ho arrived at Wellington in 1851 with his wife, having made the voyago in tho ship Clara. He took up land in tho Hutfr- Valley, but after some years sold' out and • removed to Hawke's Bay, where he remained until just before the troubles with tho Maoris arose, when he left for' Canterbury, and sfcill carried on the occupation of farmer. .Several bad seasons.caused.him to relinquish that occupation, and he then entered the teaching profession. In that capacity he occupied several positions, until-ill-health compelled him to retire after 25 years' service. His pupils are' scattered over the Dominion, and many can testify to his sterling worth of character. In late years Mr. Cheyne has lived in various'parts of the .North Island,- finally settling -in Auckland, where he lived until • his death. Mr. Cheyne leaves two sons, tho elder of whom is living in Palmerston North, while tho younger is in business.at Hamilton.
