RECRUITING
RJUSERVISTS' APPEALS.
The Reservists selected at tho first, ballot for service in the Expeditionary Forces wore allowed a period of ten days for appeal. This period will ex-, piro ou Monday next, and present indications are that tho number of appeals is going to be smaller than was generally expected. Apparently the majority of the men wno were picked up by tho ballot are prepared to accept thoir fortune without cavil. A few "religious" and "conscientious" objectors axe appearing, and their cases will receive attention at the hands of theMilitary Service Boards in due course. Reservists who do not intend to appeal have no legal obligation to take, any action at all until they receive further notice to present themselves for medical examination. But it will simplify matters for the recruits and assist the Defence authorities if the Heservists report themselvos to the officer commanding tho group in which they reside Tho Military Service Board for the Wellington district will sit in the City next week, probably on Wednesday, for the hearing of appeals. Reservists will receive notice when their; appeals are to be heard. The recruiting authorities are examining carefully the cases reported _to them of men already enlisted being summoned for service under the compulsory clauses of the Act. The exI planation in-some cas6S is to be found in the carelessness of the Reservist himself, and it is likely that in other cases confusion has beon caused- by similarity of names and insufficient addresses. It has been found, for example, that a man with two Christian, names has used both, of them on his registration paper and only one of them when enlisting in the. Forceß. If "John James Brown" is shown on the roll as a member- of the Reserve, the Government Statistician will not re-, move the name when notified that "John Brown" has entered camp.
