LIGHTING PRIVATE WAYS

♦ — 'LEGISLATIVE POWERS WANTED. : The matter of lighting private ways has been under consideration by the .City Council for some months past. On ithis subject the By-Laws Committee reported last evening as follows:— "'That they have considered the 'question of lighting certain private ways which, although used considerably hy the public, have not becomo public streets or public ways. This question, was referred to the Municipal Conference in 1914, but legislative authority oas not yet been obtained to give effect (to tho council's decision. The committee have therefore to recommend that Jtho following resolution be forwarded &> the Minister of Internal Affairs:— 'That this, council urge the Government tto pass legislation authorising local 'bodies or municipalities to light private ways at their discretion, whero such work would bo attended with public benefit.' i Councillor W. H.'P. Barber said that, tho council desired to dp tho right ithing in tho-matter of lighting many of tho private righ(H>f-ways, as it was in tho interests of everyone that they should ho properly lighted. To that 'end they desired legislative power to lave tho right to Tight such places where it was considered judicious to Bo so. \ The recommendation was agreed to.
