SEAFARING MEN AND CONSCRIPTION. The Defence Minister was interviewed yesterday by representatives of the various sections of men concerned iu shipping—the shipping companies, the Merchant Service Guild, tho Marine Engineers, the Federated Seamen's Union, and tho Cooks and Stewards' Union. They put before Mr. Allen the danger of tho essential services of shipping being imperilled by the unrestricted conscription of members of ships' crews. The Minister told the deputation that the Government did consider shipping an essential industry, from which men must not bo drawn too freely, but he had no power to exempt seafaring men in classes. Everv facility would, however, be given to the employers and to the men themselves to lodge appeals. Mr. Allen also made tho proposal,' which was readily accepted, that the secretary of tho Merchant Service Guild or the Marine Engineers' Institute, or of either of the unions, should have the right to appeal, on behalf bf members of their organisations who might happen to be at sea when the result of the balloi was announced,
