A BATTLE RELIC
FROM H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND. Tho whole of Now Zealand will bs interested in tho following letter received by fho Mayor (Mr. J. F. Luke) yesterday from Brigadier-General Sir Alfred Robin, Commandant of the Forces:— "November 27, 1916. "Sir, —I have the honour to inform you that, a portion of the ensign staff .of H.M.S. New Zealand, struck by a. German shell during the action with tho German High Sea Fleet off the coast of Jutland on the evening nf May 31, 1916, has been presented 1o the people of New Zealand by the officers and men serving in tho ship at the time. Tlio staff has now arrived in New Zealand, and tho Hon. Minister of Defence ■desires) if you so wish, to forward tho interesting relic to the city Mayors in turn, for tho purposo of exhibiting tho same in a manner best' suited to your convenience. "Should this meet with your approval, 1 propose to hand it first to yourself. It should then be forwarded to Auckland, and from there sojit to Christchurch and Dunedin. From Dunedin it will be returned to Wellington, where it will be deposited in tho meantime in the Dominion Museum. "I should bo glad to havo your views on the matter. —I have tho hon« our to be, Sir, Your Obedient Servant, A. W. Robin, Brigadier-General, Commandant, N.Z. ''Military Forces." His Worship informed a DosnNrriM reporter that he was accepting the Commandant's offer, and later would notify the public as to what steps were being taken to exhibit this most interesting relic of one of the' greatest seafights in history.
