SWIMMING
WELLINGTON CENTRE ANNUAL MEETING. At the Boys' Institute last evening the annual meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held, Mr. T. Konayne presiding, and there were also present: Messrs. H. W. Harris, H. Blick, L. Blundell, T. Shields, H. Wilson, G. S. Hill, A. M. Farnall, and C. T. Bell. Tho annual report (a precis of whioh has already heen published) and bal-ance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected for the coming year:—President, Mr. T. Eonayne (r-eleoted); vice-presidents, Messrs. J. P. Maxwell and Wl. A. Levy; chairman, Mr. H. C. W. Blick; auditor, Mr. A. A. Somerville; 'hon. secretary, Mr. A. M. Farnall; consul, Mr. T. Shields;, handicapper, Mr. A. Jacobs,- diving judge, Mr. G. S. Hill; hon. treasurer, Mr. A. H. Stevenson; starter, Mr. A. Jacobs; timekeepers, Messrs. G. S. Hill and A. Ludwig; delegate to New Zealand Council, Mr. B. O'Neill; vice-president to N.Z.A. S.A., Mr. T. Ronayno; exeoutive, Messrs. Blick, Blundell, Shields, Wilson, Hill, Farnall, Wilton, Bell, Stevenson, and Harris. Hearty votes of thanks and appreciation were passed to the retiring secretary and the chairman i'or the valuable work done by them during the past year. , A suggestion was received from Mr. Rundell, secretary of tho association in Christchurch, pointing out that as there are such a large number of swimmers at present in camp in ston_and Trentham, that a swimming carnival should take place iit Vrdtmgton which all the soldiers ,couM attend. It was decided to adopt the suggestion, and the arrangements for the carnival are to be carried out by the Wellington Branch, while the other centres will give other help to make a success. A lengthy discussion took place on the matter of altering the rules to allow another two delegates to be on the executive.' These delegates will be one each from the Wellington and secondary schools, and it is hoped in this way to increase the schools' interest in swimming. These delegates will be properly appointed next year, and are in the meanwhile to attend the 1 meetings. . . It was' decided that a deputation wait on the Education Board as early as possible to try and arrange that early in the Now Year a special holiday be given to all school children, ana on that day' a special swimming gala would be arranged, on which, besides all sorts of other races, the school boy and'girl annual competitions bo held. Last year the gala was left too lato in the. year, and'consequently the day was so cold that only a very limited number turned out, and it has heen decided that the gala will he held in good weather, this year.
Constable Minogue and Mrs. Minogue, of Terrace End, Palmerston North, who came down to Wellington! for too ordination of their son to the priesthood, returned homo yesterday. A note in Featherston Camp Orders states that Sister W. E. White has been appointed matron as from November 20. i Mrs. Arthur Williams, who has been at Kelburn for some weeks, is now staying in .Murphy Street. _ Her daughter, Miss Joyce Williams, is staying witli Miss Richmond at Day's Bay. : Mrs. and. Miss M'Lacblan, of Napier, are staying at-Balraoral. Tho entertainment given by the .Pioneer Club in aid-of Dr. Bennett's Serbian Fund, will take place to-mor-row. afternoon. Mr. Buckeridsje lias arranged an attractive musical programme, and there will be flowers, cake, and fancy goods Bold. Members are asked'to bo present and bring their friends. S . Mrs. Brailsford and Miss Youmaiis lickl a most successful Tied Cross tea at Miss Youmans' rosidence. Maida. Tale, in Roseneath last Saturday. About £40 was I ;realised altogether, and will he forwarded to the British Red Cross, London, to T>rovide extra comforts for the Now Zealand men." A' receiving depot for the Spinsters' Caravan will bo at the Returned Soldiers' Club, or at Doyle Bros., Home Street. All'contributions aro requested to be forwarded by Thursday next. The following sums have been. received bv Mrs. J. P. Luke, Mayoress: Captain 'Eokford, £3 (for Christmas for soldiers): Anonymous (per Mrs. W. Fordham), £2 10s.; employees George and Kersley, £5 (for Christmas gifts) ; air -cushions from Miss Newton; Waiwetu Golf Club, £5 15s. fid. (for Red Cross). The' sum of £5 15s. fid. forwarded by the Waiwetu Golf Club was made up from various prizes competed for and handed over by the winners recently. These consisted of: Mixed foursome (A. J. Uobbs's. captain's tjwA won bv Miss V. Bennett and !R. C. Kirk, Miss M. Downes and_G. F. Judd, £1 Is.: H. J. Palmer's prize, won bv J. S. Black, £1. Is.: men's championship, won by W. Whitehead and J. M. Donovan, £1 Is.; ladies' cliamoionsbip. won bv Miss E. Gaynor, 10s. 63.; J. F. Atkins's cup competition, won by J. L. Blank and A. G. .Tones, 10s. fid.: monthly button competitions, G. F. Judd, 4s. (5d.: G. A. Wilkes (3). 13s. 6d.; A. G. Jones. 4s. 6d.; A: J Hobbs, 4s. 6d.; Miss L. Walters. 4s. fid.; total. £1 lis. 6d. The total proceeds, £5 los. 6d., are to bo devoted to the Red Cross fuud ; The entrance'fees for G. Cook's prize, to be donated to the Belgian Relief Fund, total 18s. The Alice Parkinson Committee met last week, when further steps were discussed to got the verdict reconsidered. It is felt by the committee that at A time when women are doing so much, for the country it would bo a gracious act on tho part of the Government to take a morejhumane view of this case. Correspondence from other centres showed that the interest in Alice Parkinson remains unabated.
