SOUTHERN SITTINGS By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, November 27. Tho Military Scrvico Hoard sat today to hear fourteen appeals against being called up for active service. George Crozier, dairyman. Marshlands, appealed on tho grounds that ho always understood dairy farmers would be exempted. He and his three brothers were engaged on tho farm. The ease was allowed stand over till the appeal of another brother came before the board. Edward and Harry Ha'rtnell, farmers. AA'oolston, appealed on the grounds of domestic circumstanccs. Harry Hartnell said he was prepared to serve, and the ca-se was adjourned till another brother camo before tho board tomorrow. ' Hubert Joseph M'Teigue and Ernest James M'Teigue, dairy farmers, Halswell, next appeared before the board. Hubert was granted exemption on the grounds of medical unfitness, while the case of Ernest was held over to permit of tho board making., inquiries regarding throe other brothers. Alexander Thompson was granted exemption as one brother had enlisted and another was -unfit for service. William Frank Baslior, of Marshlands, appealed on the ground of domestic circumstanccs, and Peter Robert Stanley Basher on the samo ground, also that by reason of his occupation (market gardener) his calling up was contrary to the public interest. Peter Basher's appeal was dismissed, and William Basher's was upheld. Herbert Hugh Frizzell, was exempted on the ground of Tinfitness. AVm. Ernest Frizzell, of Fendalton, appealed on three grounds: (1) That his mother and sisters were dejiendent on him; (2) that he had conscientious objections; and (3) that he was unfit. Appellant said _ the tenets of his Church (the Primitive Brethren) wero against war, and ho was granted an adjournment till to-morrow to adduce ovidence in support. The chairman. Mr. J. E. Evans, S.M., said tho hoard would have to decide whether adherents of appellant's particular Church should be exempted or not. Edgar Bruce Hubbard and Henry Bertram Hubbard, of Biccarton, appealed on grounds of domestic circumstances and their occupation (fanning). The father of appellants said both wero willing to enlist, but circumstances prevented them doing so. One looked after the agricultural work of the farm and the other looked after tho stock. The board decided to call one son up now, and to adjourn the case of tho other -for three months, the father being allowed till to-morrow to say which one should go to the ballot. AA r illiam John Murphy, a carter, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. His only brother had been called up. The caso was adjourned till the brother's case was called, when both were heard together. One appellant was discharged on sight. The board adjourned until to-morrow. SITTING AT OAMARU. By Telegraph—Press Association. Oamaru, November 27. The Military Service Appeal Board sat at Oamaru to-day, Mr. IT. J. AViddort'son, S.M., presiding. Robert Andeison Taylor and James Don Taylor, farmers, Duntroon, and Neil il'Phee, farmer, Awamoko, appealed on the ground that their enlistment was contrary to the public interest, and would occasion undue hardship. Michael Edward M'Plieo, fanner, of Awamoko, drawn in the recent ballot, applied for an extension of time. Robert Anderson Taylor said be had been farming for six years, and. was married. He worked liimself, and also employed others. It was hard to obtain anyone to manage the farm. If asked to go he would like to remam till tho harvest. James. Don Taylor, a married man with one child, said his farm adjoined his brsUier'a, but was worked independently. Flo carried on single-handed, and wished to stay Till March or April to free other members of the family. He had several brothers, and if help was obtainable tne married brother# could carry ou the farm.' Beforo the estate was divided tho farms were under one management. The father could manage the farm. He was willing to do his share at the front. Neil M'Fhee, farmer, a single man, said""that in whiter he employed two men permanently and one for odd jobs. The chief difficulty was to'obtain labour to ftee one Of the familv of six brothers. It was not tree that his mother's brothers farms adjoined appellant's. There were difficulties m the way of one married brother managing for the others. None of the'brothers had offered their services. He was willing to go if satisfactory arrangements could be made. Michael Edward M'Plieo, farmer, a single man, said Tie has a mother and a widowed sister an<l child dependant on his farm. Appellant was drawn in the ballot, and was prepared to go. Ho was in favour of tonscription, and was making provision to go. He asked an extension of a month to complete shearing.
