STUBBORN FIGHTING ON THE DANUBE
THE CHANNEL RAID RUMOURED CHANGE AT THE ADMIRALTY The orisie in Rumania is still acute, but, to-day's news does nob disclose any material change in the situation. The war critics have been studying the problem from whatever data is available, and on the whole are of the opinion that Germany Trill ultimately find small profit, if any, in her enterprise. All take a hopeful view of the situation. The "Observer" adds its opinion that the 'Allies ought to make their major effort in the Near East, crumple up Turkey, open the Dardanelles, and; hand this conquered area over to the Italians and the Russians, while the other members of the Entente group return to the Western and' Russian fronts to deal the finishing blows. Bad weather iu the Balkans is" hampering the operations in that theatre, whilo the fighting on the Somme has been , principally confined to artillery bombardments. A late cablegram states that thunderstorms and. heavy rain iu 'Australia are delaying the traasit of the war news.
