THE BALLOT
-4 MANY RESERVISTS APPEALING. Appeals from men affected ; by the ballot are beginning to reach the Defence authorities in considerable numbers, and probably the bulk of them will arrive this week. It is expected that a considerable proportion of the 4000 odd men who hare been summoned for service _ will make formal appeals for exemption. Just how many men will be rejected by the Medical Boards or exempted by the Military Service Boards is uncertain, since the authorities have had no exact information to guide them in their estimates, but the number of men selected by ballot provides a big margin over actual requirements, so as to allow for temporary exemptions and rejections. The- Military Service Board for the "Wellington Military District will hold its first sittings in 'Wellington on Wednesday, December 6. and by that time the Defence authorities expect to liavo a long list of appeals awaiting attention. Some Reservists are appealing on the ground that they are medically unfit'for service in the Expeditionary. Forces. This is not necessary, since each recruit lias to go before a Medical Board in any case, and the question of his fitness will he determined then. His own opinion concerning his fitness may not be of any great value, and the Act provides that a man who is not fit for service abroad may he nßed for home service, or any service at all connected with the prosecution of the war.
