VARIOUS APPEALS LENGTHY SITTING AT MILTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedln, November 24. The Military Appeal Board for Otago sat to-day at Wilton. Eleven appeals are down for imaring. The first appeal, that of John Hamilton, was allowed, as a mistake ha<l _ been made. Appellant is not in the.First Division; he bas been married ten years. Alexander Lockhart appealed on the ground that he was not in tho First Division, having been bom in 1868. The apEeal was allowed. Thos. Brown Ho ockhart, brother of tho preceding appellant, appealed on the ground that as he bad no brothers in tho First Division, he did not come within the provisions of Clause'3s, The appeal was allowed. _ Milton Fred! Clark, aged 42 years, single, appealed 011 tho' grounds that enlistment would' ho contrary to the public interests in his calling as a bootmaker and would cause hardship to others as he was the support of a mother aged 66. Decision was reserved till December 4.. David Clark and] Jasper Clark, farmers, appealed on the ground that thoir calling up' would be contrary to tho public interest. Evidence wis given that the father of the appellants was past hard work, and if tho sons wore called up tho productivity, of the farm would be reduced. The boardl decided that David Clark be called up now and tho brother in a month. Andrew Hedley Peattio and; William Alos. Peattio, farmers, also camo before the board. The former aßkedl for exemption till about May to enable him to' pub things on a proper footing, and the latter for a. total exemption. Tho case, of Wm, Pea.ttie was adjourned sine die on condition that- he remain- j ed in the same occupation. The case of Andrew Peattie was adjourned for two months to enable arrangements to be made to let him go. GASES AT WHANCAREI. Whangareii November 24. The Military Service Board commenced a sitting at Whangarei to-day, Mr. Burgess, S.M., presiding, with Mm being Messrs. G. Elliott _ and John M'Caw, Major Conlau acting as counsel for the Department. Seven appeals woro before the Court. Tho first three oases wore those of three young men engaged in farming, the r.ames being Sjrckenloy.' Robert John Syckenley said he was working on his father's farm. The father was in good health, but the conduct of tho farm ivas upon appellant and two sisters. If lio went to the war it' would' mean ruin to the farm, as the other brothers had their own: properties to look after and would not holp. . Thomas Willianv Syckenloy, another brother, single, $aid .he had. a farm of 117. acres. It would mean a great personal loss if he went to the war.. It was not possible'for other members of the family to work, the place for him. Charleß M'Kinley, who was married in June, 1915, and has a wife itnd two children, also objected to go 'for a similar reason that he would Have to leave a place of 14U acres without adequate management. . After hearing evidence at great length in each case, the Court refused exemption in tho cases of Robert John and Thomas William, but adjourned the case, of Charles for a month. Frank Morwood Eccles, fancy goods dealer, appealed'. against being, compelled to loavo his . business' without proper'provision for..the management.xho appeal was dismissed. '. ■' 1 ■ John'; Hamilton, of. Hikurangi, butcher, appealed against leaving' his business. Three months' exemption was allowed. C. R. Beehre,'carrier, was granted two months' so as not to fnterfero with wool catting.
