MORMONISM RIFE
AMONG THE MAORIS. Sister Edith, of tho Presbyterian Maori Mission, spoke very emphatically at the Presbyterian General Assembly last' evening against the doctrines of Mormonism. In her work at Nuliaka she had to fight Mormonism that had been established twenty years ago b,v missionaries from Utah. The Mormons, or Saints, as they called themselves, did not teach tho Natives that God was a, divine spirit, but lie was depicted as something material, something such as electricity. 'In reply to their teachings, the Maoris argued that Solomon had'many wives, and God was not angry with him; Lot only had one vifo. and she was turned into a pillar of salt; Job, too, only had one wife, and lin had trouble enough. (Laughter.) That was tho way they thought about tho marriage question. Sho was glad, however, to say that Mormonism was not gaining ground in , Nuliaka, though their efforts were unrelated. It was understood that each missionary had to snend two years in tho mission field beforo he could take a. higher plaeo in tho Temple at Utah. At tho present timo there were eighty of tlieso Latter Day Saints in NewZealand, and some of them were engaged in tho distribution of literature in tho cities.
