OUR CHEESE EXPORT
RUMOURS OF SEIZURE IN ENGLAND
, There is considerable stir among cheese, producers in parts of tho Dominion at present on account of certain nows they havo received by cablo. | This nows_ is in effect a warning that the Imperial Government contemplates requisitioning in England half of tho Now Zealand cheese. Mcotings of cheese-producers are being held at Paliiatua and at Hawera to consider the situation. One of tlio cablegrams comes from the agent of one of their associations in London, and tho other has the authority of a gentleman who was formerly Agent-General of an Australfan State. Tho Government hero has ito information whatever on tbo subject, either from the High Commissioner or Mr. Massey, and a cablegram has been sent to Mr. Massey inquiring what is the truth about the matter. Representatives of dairying districts at the wool conference hero yesterday were inclined to doubt'tlio bona fides ot "the rumour. They suspected . that the report, while no doubt forwarded to New Zealand in good faith, may have its origin with interested parties anxious to bear the cheese market. Some months ago tlie<lmperial Government offered Bd. per lb. for tho New Zealand cheese export, and the factoryowners demanded Bfd. The negotiations fell through, and now tho factories are getting ahout IOJd. for that cheese. ' Tho report states that the Imperial Government will take half of our cheese in England at 100s. per hun-dred-weight.
