SWIMMING
The annual report of tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association (Wellington Centre) states that the season 1915-16 was necessarily, a quiet one, as tlie great majority of those who have, in recent years, taken part.in competitive swimming nro now taking their part in waiv Therefore, no ■ seniorchampionships were decided. The membership of all clubs has been. further depleted through tho 6plendid response to tho call to. duty yhoch. has been made hy swimmers in general. To all the fighting swimmers tho centre extends food wishes for success in the great conict, and a safe return home.. A great deal of attention has been given to school children.and to. juniors, Mr. T. Shields having displayed- his customary interest and activity in that direction. A total number of 39S certificates have been awarded to school boys and school girls who have, in their first season, succeeded in swimming distances varying from 100 yards to !!SOO yards. Of tho total 'number of 303, forty-one were awarded to children who have succeeded in swimming a mile or over. ~Tho City C'ouncilsis heartily thanked for its decision to allow all children who have succeeded iij swimming a niilo or over tho free use of tho Corporation Baths for. one year, as tho concession will be a great incentive to children to indulge in long-distance swimming. It is hoped to arrange in the near future for a carnival or carnivals to bo held • for tho benefit of patriotic funds. The. incoming executive is recommended to givo consideration to the matter of holding carnivals during tho coming season, it being improbable that any club will be of sufficient strength to successfully cope witli the work entailed.
