Henry Johnson, alias Henry .William Smith Barton, on a charge of breaking and. entering and .stealing a lady's overcoat, five pairs of spectacles, and a set of military hair brushes, a silver wristlet watch, and a pair of scissors, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment aud declared to. be an habitual criminal. Emily Amelia Callaghan, charged with endeavouring to extort £1000 from Andrew Ruthveu Buchanan by pleaded guilty. The accused's lawyer entered a plea for leniency, stating that sbo was in a highly excited condition when jhe sent* the letter to Buchanan asking^ for the money, as elio really believed that he had l seduced her daughter. '* His Honour said ho would consider tho matter before coming Yto a decision. Tho woman was remanded till to-morrow morning.
