HEAVY PRESSURE BY THE ENEMY
RUSSIANS FALL.BACK
A SEPARATE PEACE . PLOT
SENSATION I RUSSIAN DUMA
\ THE ALLIES'VICTORY AT
MONASTIR
The heavy storms in Europe have disorganised the telegraphio communications, and news from the theatres of the war is scanty. There is a "relative calm" on the Western front. Severe fighting is reported from the Carso, on the Italian front, where the enemy made a costly attack on the Italian trench works.' There is no new 6 from the Russian war front, but a dispatch from the'"Daily Chronicle" convoys an amazing condition of affairs in Russian politics. The astounding fact appears that certain members of the Russian Court and Government are pro-German—at least, to the extent that they favour a separate peace 1 The evacuation of Monastir by the enemy has been greeted by a chorus of approval and rejoicing, although there comes a note of warning—great difficulties lie beyond Monastir, and 15 is yet too soon to regard the enemy as beaten. The military and political value of the coup, however, is not disputed. The pressure of the enemy on the Rumanians is increasing at certain points, notably in the Jiul Valley, where the Russians who are cooperating with the Rumanians in defence of the latter's threatened country have been compelled to fall back. A Rumanian attack in the region of Campulung, on the authority of a Russian communique, failed. The "Daily Telegraph's" military correspondent says that Rumania is sorely beset, and asserts that the moment for her intervention was chosen in complete disregard of the Allies' strategio needs.
