The New South Wales Legislative Council has passed the Bill for prolonging the life of Parliament. The Political Labour League has presented tho Governor (Sir Gerald Strickland) with a, petition signed by 20,000 people protesting against the prolongation of Parliament. THE WAIRUNA EXPLOSION . , 'AN OPEN VERDICT. Sydney, November 21. The Coroner returned an open verdict at the inquiry into the explosion ou tho Wairuna.
[A disastrous explosion occurred on the Union Company's steamer Wairuna, on September 27 last, whilst the vessel was discharging cargo at the Margaret Street Wharf, Sydney, and as a result six men were killed outright. Tho explosion occurred in the lower hold, in which benzine was carried. It is supposed that a light came ,in contact with tho fumes from the benzine, although tho cargo had all been discharged tho previous night. Eighteen men were working in the hold at the time and they were hurled in all directions by the force of- the explosion. The firemen had the greatest difficulty in rescuing the victims owing to the dense Bmoke and fumes, lie damage to the steamer/itself was not i senous.] ' - WHEAT CARRIERS i ■ i.
