MORE PEACE RUMOURS
MORE "KITES" FROM GERMAN STRINGS PRESIDENT WILSON'S /ATTITUDE Australian-New Zealand Gable Association. (Rec. November 21, 0.50 a.m.) London, November 19. The "New York Times" Berlin correspondent states that there is much peace talk in Germany. "There ,is an idea," he says, "that 6ome step by. President Wilson would not be unat- : tractive. The Catholic Party, who hold; ■ the balance of power, and the Socialist leaders are conducting a campaign for an immediate peace, without annexation." Herr Von Weigand, in the "New York World," says: "Vienna has been 1 stirred by a report that President Wilson contemplates inviting .representatives of the belligerents to a preliminary peace conference at Washington. The Austrian Press and public rejoice, but the officials are sceptical, owing to the absence of confirmation. A report in the "New York Herald" says that the officials at Washington deny the report of a peace move. President Wilson's attitude is that any such action would be ill-timed until the belligerents indicate that such a step' would he welcome. The "New York Times" has com-, menced a series of articles by a publicist, whose competence and authority, would be recognised in both _ hemispheres, suggesting that the time has. arrived for considering whether the war may not shortly be ended by an inter-; national agreement, in which the United States would participate.
