During the last eseven rnontbs, fines amounting to £300,000 sterling liave been imposed in Denmark on smugglers, and many heavy imprisonments. Recently a fine of £'30,000 sterling was imposed for a single offence, yet such penalties fail to deter offenders. Many of tho smugglers are Germans, and j there are some Danes, who are work-1 ing international organisations. A largo Gorman Copenhagen merchant was convicted of smuggling 60,000 pounds of rubber sealed in herring tins. It is believed that Germany pa.\6 the fines.
