General Birdwood, in tho courso of a letter to Mrs. S. A. Norrie, of Koso. Bay, Sydney, in whicH' he acknowledges rcecipt.of a scarf kniitexl by a number of Sydney ladies, says:—"l see among the names of the ladies who so kindly co-oporated in the making of the scarf many that are identical with the names of my men hero, and I much like to think and hope that some, at all evontej may bo near relations of t/ie magnificent men I have with me. No words of mine can express my feelings for ono and all of them, and as days go by, and we servo longer together, and wo get to know each other so very well, I personally becomo more devoted to them than over, and my great regret is that one is ablo to do so littlo for them in return for all their magnificont, unselfish, and devoted service. If all at homo could only see tho conditions under which our men live from day to day and from night to night, they would realise the amount- of self-sacrifice and devotion to duty that is required to maintain the cheerful and determined front, and which* I well know they will continuo to uphold until we have finally defeated these Germans."
