TRENCH COMFORTS

EFFORT : . t ;0!l' :,'.■ ■■ ~ 1— ' GOOD DAY'S WORK Yesterday a Y.M.C.A. effort was Xnade to raisefunds with wliioh to pro.vido our soldiers with trench comforts. (Tho effort was made solely by the i{f™M\ Auxiliary of the Wellington ii.M.C.A. About three weeks ago it ttas decided to hold a flower day, and then when news .., was received from wlessrs. Vamey and Hay that money lor winter comforts was needed, it was decided to mako a trench comforts;'appeal. Although it was thus hurriedly organised;;tho effort was successful, and a good sum of money was raised. ■ _ The effort took the form of collecting m the streets, and selling at stalls •such things as flowers, sweets, cakes, and produce; Not a great deal of produce was sent in, but one very welcome line was 150 dozen eggsfro'm the country. It is considered that had tho country people been able to help they would have done so very liberal-l-T' . m, . fc they are now at the height'of then- busy season. The flowers, of course, sold readily, Jtlso the sweets. .Stall-holders say they did.a. good day's business. The weather: favoured the effort/, and it is understood, that, tho workers generally are.well.satisfied with the result. '' The nqed of ensuring winter comforts is a matter of great importance, and tho National Committee of the i.M.C.A. are now.making an appeal to New Zealand for £20;000 for the purpose of providing them. This money .is wanted 1 for remission to London as soon; as possible. Last' Saturday the •Y.M.C.A. sent forward £15,000,' which had been raised in.the Dominion iii the last twelve months. Altogether, £19,000 has been forwarded to London. Of £4000 allotted to Egypt, only £1500 has so far been called up. A total of £430 was in hand last night, and it was expected that when everj-thirig had been accounted for the day would realise £500. This money will bo cabled away immediate!?, ':so that it can be spent on the men in the trenches..
