WOMAN'S WORLD

Women's National Reserve Ambulance Section. Owing to the number of inquiries for instruction in "home nursing," the leader of the ambulance of the Reserve, Mrs. A. H. Waters, will arrange for a series of St. John Ambulance lectures, to begin immediately sufficient namos como to hand. As Christmas is so.near, it is. desirable to begin as early _as possible. All ladies, intending to join are asked to send in their names ; and address at once to Mrs. Doyle, 157 Fcatherston Street—' W.N.R. Offices. The dance given last night in' aid' of the Trentham Soldiers' Christmas 1 Gift Fund, arranged by Mesdames W. p., F. D., and A. Middleton, and Mrs. : Andrews, was a great success, and a number of soldiers were present. This dance had been postponed from October 13 owing to a death in the family. The Concert Chamber was prettily decorated . with flags, and on the stage were quantifies of lilies and rhododendrons. ;

TRENCH COMFORTS YESTERDAY'S Y.M.C.A. EFFORT. . Yesterday dawned fresh and fair, so %ho stall-holders and street collectors found the public very generous in their response to tlib appeal for funds for tho soldiers in the trenches. Beautiful flowers —hunches, bouquets, and button-holes—found a ready sale throughout tho day. These had been mostly packed carefully and sent in frojn our suburbs of Seatoun, tho Hutt, and county districts 'as well. Produce, poultry, and eggs found ready salo everywhere. Miss Barnes and ' Mrs. Wright, in their stall opposite the Government Buildings, did very good business in sales and with their collecting boxes. Flowers hnd been sent from Khandallah, and other ladies helping were Sirs. J. Radcliffe, Mrs. Nowbold, Mrs. Parkes, Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Chamberlain, and the Misses Newbold, Esson, and Dorrington. Tho three stalls at KelburnsAvenue wero all gaily draped and put up for the stallholders by the; Economic. These stalls were under the direction of Mrs. Rose.. Mesdames Grant and .M'Manaway were in charge of tho stall: at Boulcott Street. The stall at Kelburn Avenue corner was in charge of Mesdames Christie, Purdy, Rose, and Mather. : The stall opposite Mrs. Hislop Patrick; and Miss Rennio did good business. ' Tho home-made cakes were noticeably good , at both those stalls. Mrs. Rose was' especially grateful to Mrs. Stichbury, Mrs. Denton, and' others for help and donations, and to Sirs. Scales for quantities of lovely flowers. Mrs. Rose also wishes to thank most cordially all her co-workers at the Red Cross rooms in Mercer Street.' The stalls at the Post Office and tho Bank of New Zealand were in charge of the members of the Y.W.0.A., and Mrs. Campbell was the convenor. Mis. Clay was in charge, and her assistants were: Mrs. Hoby, Mrs. and. Miss Adams, and Mrs. Black. Mrs. Pearson (tho president of the Y.W.C.A.) was in charge at the Bank of New Zealand corner, and her helpers were: Mesdames Shirtcliffe, Wilson, Roughton, and Miss Bennie. Messrs. Harcourt's auction rooms were kindly lent as a receiving depot, and here a number of tinned goods had been generously sent by the warehouses. The Y.W.C.A. had offered to furnish and manage these two stalls. The girl helpers by their generosity and unselfishness had managed to' collect quite a little nest-egg before the stalls were! opened, and by the end of the day they had made nearly £127 as the result of their splendid effort. Mrs. Montague and Mrs. Waterhouse had a stall at Boulcott Street, and were assisted by Mrs. Cousins and the Misses Lowe, Waterhouse, Montague, Donon, Richardson, Frances (2), and Grace, and. in connection with this stall Miss Hatch had a cake stall in the Y.M.C.A. building in Willis Street. At Winder's corner Mrs. Fossette and her helpers were Mesdames Thompson, Dumbell, Bemiet, Longmore, and Gardiner, and 20' girls. Here beautiful flowers were itf great profusion, and plenty of produce. was for | salo. ; At the top of the Kelburn tramway was another stall that did splendid business.. This was managed by Mes- ,■ dames Kersley and Vamey, who were, helped by Mesdames Meredith, Finlay, ■ Moore, Haiii, and the Misses Smith, Rothenb'erg, and Varney. By midday this stall had taken nearly £60, and was sold out. Another good place for business was the stand at Courtenay Place, under the • management of Mesdames Piper and Laurenson. The stall near The Dominion office, managed by Mrs. Hamilton, was gaily draped in red, white, and blue, and displayed plenty of produce and flowers.
