What might be looked upon as an ocean race between tho Golden Gate and tho Louisa flraig was completed by the arrival of the Louisa Craig at Lyttelton recently. "Most people consider that tho flyer of tho Stars and Stripes beat the Louisa Craig," remarked the captain to a Christchurch reporter, "but I think my afog book will convince people to the contrary." He -pointed out that the Louisa- ] Craig carried much the larger stretch of canvas of the two, and also. that the Golden Gats had recently been docked, while it was nine months since tho Louis"& Craig was attended to. Tho best day's run by the Louisa Craig, or Raupo to give her her new name, was 213 miles, and tho captain stated that at times he should have been doing 270 miles a day but for the foul condition of his vessel with marine growth. Tlie Golden Gate took 48 days to do the trip to Auckland from San Francisco, but the Raupo only took 48 days' to no the run to Portland Island, which is at least another day's sailing, and the whole trip to Lyttelton occupied 53 days. Under decent conditions the captain of the Kaupo remarked that no could havo done the trip in 10 days less, but tho dirty bottom accounted for moat of tho delay. Captain R. Kennedy is in chargo of the Raupo. ii_ MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. C. M'lvor has signed on a special service ship as fourth officer. Mr. H. K.
