Concert and Dance at Returned tl Soldiers' Club. j. 1 . Under the direction of the Spinsters' Club, a capital little entertainment was given for the returned soldiers , and their friends at the club-rooms on h Lambton Quay last night Everything } was done in a pleasantly mtormal manner. comfortable chairs and ' lounges were so arranged that there was no "stiffness anywhere, and people could chat comfortably with each other between the items. The opening song ' and chorus was sung by , the Spinsters themselves, 'The Long, Lon" Trail," and Miss Shepherd followed with a clever musical monologue, ' of which she played the accompaniment J herself/ Miss Watkins and Mrs. " Withers each contributed piano solos, o the Misses D. Isaacs and Stuart and r Mrs Hyams sang, and there were r more recitations and dancing and s choruses, which made the .time pass l most pleasantly. When the concert •] was finished, Mr. Smith thanked the - Spinsters (for. their entertainment, and also for the handsome bookcase t which had been recently presented by thcin to tho club. Ho dwelt on the many uses and conveniences which tho f club possessed for the returned sol- t dicrs. and said how much they en- j joyed these little social evenings there, i The snpper-room was gay with flaming i gladioli and vases of roses of every hue. ' On Wednesday night last a team ' from the Wellington Rifle Section ol ' the Women's National Reserve jour- i neyed to Petonc in order to compete with a team from the Ladies Rifle Club in tliat township. The match was a very evenly contested one, and was the cause of much enthusiasm. Many visitors wore present, including Colonel and Mrs. Porter. 'The Wellington Rifle Class, though only a junior class, has made rapid strides, and great credit is due to the instructor for coaching them to defeat such a first-class team as the Petone Ladies' Club. Social Committee, was held ; last week, when a very enjoyable time 'was spent. The euchre tournament I was in charge of Miss Segneft, Mrs. ' Fortune, and Miss IV. Hogg, the pnzei winners being: Ladies and mens nrst prizes, Mrs. Miles and Mr. Grant. I The booby prizes were won by Miss I Lowe and Mr. Thawley. Tho musical I programme was in the hands of Miss : Lankshcar, Mr. Miles and Mr. Hawk--1 head. Tho following members contriibuted items:—Miss- Segricff, Miss. Lowe, Miss Lankshear, Mrs. Chitty, Mrs. Fortune, Mr. Baker, Mr. Hawkhead, and Mr. Burby, who gave a humorous recitation. Miss Lankshear and Mrs. Fortune were the accompan- " ■ ists. The evening wound up with concerted choruses. On AVednesday afternoon Miss Carter 1 resumed'her cooking demonstration at the Gas Company's Office, when there i .was a fair attendance of ladies. Tho ' menu consisted of the following:— | American dainties, scones, raisin and date bread, boiled rice, brown roll, i Japanese rice, spice sponge. A large bedspread is being worked in ) sections by members of tho Spinsters' Club; which when finished will bo sent \ to the No. 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital.
