Oil Tuesday evening the Government training steamer Amokura left Port Chalmers for the southern outlying islands. According to a southern exchange the thirty-three new boys on the Amokura arc settling down to their duties in a highly satisfactory manner. After cruising round the islands, looking into unfrequented corners in search of castaways and replenishing provision depots, the vessel will return to New Zealand, and tho Jtarino Department advise that they expect her back here on or about December 10. Slie will afterwards go on a trip round the more northern islands. SALVAGING THE ANTIOPE. The salvaging of tho submerged Antiope at the Bluff seems to be a matter of uncertainty at present.' says a southern paper. The vessel's keel, from the mainmast to tho break of the poop, and another jwrtion of the keel further forward is resting on tho rock, and this brings the bilge in contact with the rooky pinnacles, giving the deck a. steep list sideways of about 38dog. Over 250 tons ofcargo, out of a total of about 2CQO tons, have been salvaged, and most of the vessel's spars have been removed. The water inside the hull rises and falls with tidal riro and fall. A steam-driven pump of about a foot in diameter is to be used to asocrtain whether Mie amount of the water in the hull can be appreciably reduced by that means. If the result is promising the salvage tug Dunedin will be engaged, and her powerful pumping plant should soon show whether salvage is practicable by pumping. FIJIAN SHIPPING PROPOSAL. Advice from Suva, says an exchange, Is to the effect that the Fijian Government proposes to run a fleet of steamers as an .ordinary trading concern.
