DISCHARGED SOLDIERS

| THE INFORMATION DEPARTMENT. . The following progress statement of. the work of the Discharged Soldiers' Information, Department' as at November 14 is made available by the Minister in Charge (the Hon. A. L. Herdman) Total number of men on register:— (a) Disposed of, 5028; (b) under action, ' 510; (c) not ready for action (including men returned by recent transports, _412; total, 6950. Particulars showing how cases dealt with:—' (A) Cases disposed of:—(a) Men who have work to return to, sad men who have re-enlisted or returned to military duty, etd 2147; (b) men placed; in employment, 1182; (c) men who have signed "assistance not required," 1135; (d) left New Zealand, or cannot ascertain address, 148; (e) men who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who have accepted work the Department found for them, but failed to start work, 416; total, 5028. (B)'Cases under action:—(a) Reports upon cases not yet returned by officers making inquiries. 128; (b) awaiting further advice (including men who have stated that they are not yet ready For work), 228; (c) at present on employment wanted register, 154; total, 510.

(C) Cases not ready for action:—Men convalescing, not ready for. employment, and not yet discharged by, the military authorities, 412. Grand total, 5950.
