SIXTY YEARS AGO

"Mr. Boy's recent visit to Wanganui has been very useful. There is now a fair prospect of tho swampy part of Victoria Avenue and the steep ascent of St. John's Bush being converted into a safo and easy road. A' strong body of Natives were employed in side-cur-ting the cliff opposite Messrs. Taylor and Watt's store, with the view of bringing the road -to a ferry station opposite Victoria Avenuo. But thero being no ono to pay their wages these

Natives struck work, since which some Europeans have been engaged, and it . is hoped that the funds may be provided for fencing'in the public reserve of about forty acres, and re-erecting a ferryman's house thereon. But the work should not stop here. By a bridgo over Major Durie's Creek, more side cutting of the hill beyond it, easier access to tho proposed ferry would bo given to the inhabitants about No. 3 liue and others higher up the river bank. All this could ho effected at a moderate cost. Let our members see what thoy can do for us in the matter." —Wanganui "Chronicle," October 2, 1856.
