Armgaard Karl Graves, who is under arrest for attempting to blackmail Countess Bernstorff'(wife of the German Ambassador at Washington),, makos sensational allegations. He v says that Count Bernstorff and his friends made'a million "by playing stocks on advance information of the activities of the submarine TJS3. Graves assorts that code letters which he offered to the German Embassy contained diplomatic secrets of. great importance to the United States, which the German Embassy was afraid to permit him to translate. Graves, therefore, does not expect tbo Embassy to proceed with the charges. . . Count Bernstorff, on being interviewed, characterised the charges'as "rot."

At a conference at wnich' Mr. Massey, Sir Joseph Ward, and representatives of the colonial meat trade wero present, tho manner of handling tho surplus of New Zealand meat in England was discussed. Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward in the afternoon met tho Executive Committee of tho New Zealand War Contingent Association, af?d discussed tho methods of dealing with' wounded and invalided men. Colonel Sam Hughes (Canadian Defence Minister) has resigned at tho request of the Premier, owing to differences of opinion over tho management of the forces overseas. The appointment of Mr. Porley as Overseas Minister precipitated tho trouble.
