Ho had frith Mm Toa Tore, Belle Boyno, the full-sister to Bowi Poto, and an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Cardinal Beaufort from Cintra. Tho last-named -was sired in Australia, but bred at Mr. Or. M. Currio's stud, nnd after failing to find a buyer in Sydney last Easter she was leased to Coffey. Tho lattor and his charges go on to New Plymouth this morning. Toa Tero won several important handicaps in Sydney, but tho other pair did not fuco tho starter. s/ T. Quinlivan passed through hero on Monday with Hunting, who was repurchased by Mr.' E. .T. Watt during tho Eiccarton Meeting, and also a couple of youngsters purchased at tho Christchurch sales. They aro a full-si6ter to Nones and the half-brother by Martian to Kilrain. ' A Sydney writer mentions that Bee and Zuland aro likely to be sold, and will not be brought back to the Dominion.
An Australian scribe states that Mr. W. Ct.. Stead was very anxious to secure P. Dempsey to ride Sasanof .in the Melbourne Cup, and offered tho owner of Lingle, who had retained Dempsey, .£ISOO to forego his call, but the latter would i>ot budge. F. Foley, who was subsequently given the mount on the Cup winner, was the most successful lighfc-weight jockey in Sydney at the conclusion of the A.J.C. Spring Meeting.. '
Mr. C. Tricklebank, owner Of The Summit and Belgian Maid, is at present on a visit to Wellington to see his son Harry, who is leaving with the Nineteenth Reinforcements. Another 6on, Albert, the well-known hurdle rider, goes into camp after the Ashhurst Meeting.
The' champion pacer, Gur Thorpe, is reported to have changed hands last week for 1500gns. N . At the conclusion of the racing at Riccarton. it .was reported that Mr. T. H. Wolaroi, winner of the.V.R.C. Derby, was bred by his owner, Mr. D. U. Seaton. As a yearling he'was offered at the Bandwick 6ales with a reserve of' 250gns., but no one would take him. His breeder was thus compelled to take him home and :have hinv trained, with, most 'Satisfactory results, as he won all the important two-year-old events, and has now won the V.R.C. Derby. Excuses are made for the defeat of Kitboy owing to the state of the going, but it is hard to understand this, as the colt had won in heavy going at Bandwick.' A peculiar coincidence happened at Riccarton on Saturday, when A. Eeed rode the winning double, his brother, R. Eeed, rode the second horse in each race, and E; C. Jones was in third place twice. At the Riccarton Meeting C. Emerson had twenty-four rides aud rode five winners, J. O'Shea had sixteen rides and was up on three winners, B. Deelcy and A. Reed also rode three winners. Mr. G. L. Stead topped the list of winning owners at the C.J.C.. Meeting with Mr. T. H. Lowry followed with .£2515, Mr. G. D. Greenwood's horses earned ,£2065, and Mr. H. Friedlanier was next with ,£UOO.
