The Winton meeting on Wednesday and Thursday is the only attraction for sportsmen this week.. Acceptances for the Feilding meeting are due on Friday. The V.R.C. meeting will be continued at Flemington to-morrow, when the Oaks will Ije decided. After her Tictovy in tho Caulftold Stakes, Ettel'red will bo a good favourite. Sasanof is the fourth New Zealand-bred horse to win the Melbourne Cup. The previous ones were Martini-Henry, Carbine, and Apologue. Entries for tho Woodvtdle'' District Jockey Club's Summer Meeting close on Friday next. . A final payment for the Eleventh Feilding Stakes is duo on Friday. So far as the season has gono The Toff has the honours amongst the three-year-olds of tho.Dominion, and a meeting between ho and Sasanof in the Auckland Derby will be looked forward to with ;* deal of interest. Kilboy is also engaged, but the breakdown of tho Kilbroney colt at Flemington is probably serious, and there is littlo likolihood of him being seen out at Ellcrslie. Tho Toff, who seems to be more hardy than most of the Boniform stock, stripped particularly well for the Stead Cup on Saturday last. When Andelopia won tho Mooneo Valley Cup last month ho was ridden by tho Now Zealand jockey, H. Cairns, while Bee. who filled third place, had A. J. M'Flinn in the saddle. The last named won tho Welter Handicap on Znland later in the day. When Master Regal won the Cup Hurdles at Flemington on Saturday, it was generally thought that this was his first appearance in Melbourne. This is not so, for tl*> Regal gelding started favourite in the Hurdle race at Mooneo Valley, but after leading lo tho last fence he finished out of a place.
Hurry On, in winning tho Seplenibor Slakes '(substituted for tho Doncastcr St. Legeri at Nowmarkot, cut out the milo and three-quarters in 2min. 59 8-saec, He
simply cantered home ahead of Clarissimus. Shepherd King, the Caulfield Cup winner, started favourite for the Melbourne Cup on Saturday, arid beat all but the winner, Sasanof. Tho'Melbourne Cup has not been a good race for the'- Caulfield Cup winner. Poseidon won tho double in 190(i, but Grace Darling (second) and Dewey and Uncle Sam (third) are the only other Caulfield Cup winners that have even gained a place in the Melbourne Cup. When Hyllus won tho Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslie, it was the first success gained by a Karamu Horse in that race. Bjorneborg started a hot favourite in the race in question, but Hyllus beat him nicely at the finish. Good acceptances have boon received for the Ashhurst meeting, which takes place on Wednesday of next week, and if. favoured with fine weather the club wilL doubtless have a record gathering. With the exception of 19J& w-hen the race was run in heavy going, The Toff s time in the Stead Gold Cup on Saturday was tho slowest on record. Had the race been run at a faster pace the result would probably havo been the same. The Auckland horso Tararu Jack and Te Wheturoaiama figure among the nominations for the Feilding J.C. Spring Meeting. It is reported from Australia that Mr. B. J. Watt has established a stud at Molong, in New South Wales, wbcr» Wolawa and All Black will be quartered next season. / Good advice is ladled out occasionally in the sporting, columns of somo newspapers. A horse-trainer wrote to one the other day: "I have a horse that at times appears normal, but every now and then is very lame. What shall I do?' - Th» Answers to Correspondents Column said: "The first timo your horse is normal, sell him."
