C.I.C. MEETING

THE TOFF WINS THE STEAD GOLD CUP MEMBERS' HANDICAP WON BY ' CHAKWANA. By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, November 11. The -Canterbury Jockey Club's Metros politan Meeting concluded to-day, in fine weather, and before a large - attendance. The totalisator handled *£49,124, making £175,696 for the meeting, against .£177,015 last year. Gladful, who broke down on the morning of the race, was withdrawn from the Piort Cooper Hurdles, and tha Sarto gelding Art, who had performed creditably on the flat, was installed a good favourite. Bore and Rongahere made play till the bottom bend, where Art moved up on" the outside, and was first over the last fence. Then Crib, who got up on the inside, challenged, but it was of no avail, for the • favourite won easily. Rongahere was a fair third, and Bora and St. Curio followed m that order. .. It & good even field that contested the Greasy Welter Handicap. Samisen went out smartly, and she led the whole way. At the distance the others were being hard Tidaen, but • nothing could make any impression on the Birkenhead mare. Over the last bit the very useful Trials shot out, and got second, place from Ardmore. Next came Week End, who is due shortly, Sir Malt, Recorder, and PeroniUa. The winner set a very fast pace over the first part, which had the effect of tying up the field. Mr. A. W. Rutherford's pair, Furling and Treadfire, carried most money m the Seymour Handicap, But the distance beat Furling while Treadfire was not prominent. Ascalaphus looked dangerous down tho running, but Fabriquette finished the bat, and won by a length from British Rose, with Glondower next. Bon IrOr showed out well for six furlongs, but then faded out of it. Riga and Rongora fell during the race, and T. Mussen, the rider of the former, had a .collarbone : broken. . , The public would riot hear of Chortles defeat in -the Members' Handicap. The Multified gelding stripped well, but the weight beat him, and he Tras out of a place at the finish. Chakwana did a very smart preliminary, and in the race was quick to find her feet. With Daytime as a companion she led into the but the light-weight was then done-with, and Chakwana won comfortaly from the little-fancied Rockound, with Flying Start and Rangitero closest of the others. The winner was successful in the same event last year. The favourite was one of the first out, but the weight hampered him, which prevented him from keeping his position, and he and Taringamutu got verv bad passages. Meltchikoff also met with interference during the first furlong, and again when seeking an opening on the rails at the bottom of the straight. The biacket, Ample and Eedrock. uas the selection for the Pioneer Handicap, which resulted in the best finish between the juveniles at the meeting. La Tasse was badly loft, and took no part in the race. The field was well bunched at the distance, with Tyne and Redrock prominent. Over the final pinch Kilrea came fast, and in a good finish just failed to get up. Redrock was only a head away. Ample was slow to find her feet, and did not reach the leaders. There was general disappointment when Desert Gold was withdrawn from tha Gold Cup. The three candidates all stripped well, and no fault could. be found with any of them. The Toff, despite his two long races, looked very full, and seemed to havo done well in the in-i terim. Nones was a good favourite oir. the machine, and at the start led down the back under a strong pull, with the othors on her quarters. Entering the

tebraight the trio were together. Egypt next had a slight advantage over Nones. A furlong from homo The Toff appeared Minder the stick, and a great race to■the post resulted in a head victory for the lost named, while Nones was a similar distance away. Tho crowd cheered the trio on returning to weigh 'in. Tho jtime, 2min. (teec., was very slow, and in a faster run race the result may have ■been different.

The sensation of tho day was ,tho defeat of Biplane in. in the Eleotric Plate. ,The black colt, coupled with Bimeter, a solid favourite, but lie never looked like winning, and Hymcstra was alongside him tne whole way. Over the last bit Tete-a-Tote camo along, followed by Blmetor, and the pair comfortably accounted for tho two-year-olds. It was £ Toto-a-Tete winning by a head. The black ma.ro was successful in the same race last year. Backers suffered a voir severo reverse in' this race, as the bracketed combination was at a very short price on tho machine. Tho only excuse that can be made for Biplane is that the two races he had earlier in the meeting evidently got to the bottom of. , m '■ -A prominent Australian owner who was present at tho meeting states the stock of Comedy King do not aS m i t r *|e stand np to racing. *1, t? Acceptors all went out for tbe liendalton Handicap, one mile and a quarter. Mnllingar was first choice, with backers, /while Montana ranked next. Blaok Ada and Beltane showed 7® .\ a y from Gold Soult into the 6 j i re Sov6ra l horses appeared to have ohances, and the names of Ardenvhor, John Barleycorn, Ringform, and Seddel Bahr were being called. John Barleycorn took command at tho distance, and though Adjutant momentarily appeared dangerous,' tho Oamaru horse won with ease. Multiplication got second place after a very bad run. Mullingar got chopped out soon after the start, and was not dangerous again. The winner was a long way back in the middle part of the race, but he was full of running when Reed oalled on him, and he won with a lot in hand.
