THE BOARD OF STUDIES
The Board of Studies of tho University of New Zealand continued its sittings on Saturday. The Minister of Education (tho Hon. J". A. Hannn) attended and addressed the meeting. A letter was received from tho Education Department in regard to a conference to bo held to consider tho possibility of reducing tho cost of examinations. Tho hoard decided, that the Minister be asked to add one or more representatives of the board to the conference. Professor J. R- Brown was nominated as the first representative, and Professor Garrow was also named as a representative in the event of two 'delegates from the Board of Studies being permitted. Professor Dettmann, now visiting Sydney, was given a commission to make inquiries into the examination arrangements, in New South Wales.
A special committee reported on tho syllabus for the degree of Bachelor of Agriculture. An amended syllabus as proposed by the committee was adopted.
The board considered the syllabus in physics, as drawn up by tho teachers of physios in the four colleges. Tho proposals were agreed' to, and in addition the following motions were passed: "That candidates for bonoufs in physics must either have taken tho subject at the 'rM>eat' or must take tho 'repoat' papers at the honours stage" ; and "That the question of requiring a thesis in physics he referred back to tho professors." Professor Walker movod: "That the ordinary matricultation papers in English should not contain questions on geography and history. Irat that extra questions in theso subjects should be set for medical preliminary candidates only." Tho motion was lost. Professor Inglis moved: "That in view of the need to increase the number of fully trained scientific workers and in order to give opportunities to those who, through special circumstances, have had to gaiu knowlcdgo by discontinuous instruction, special concessions he made to such persons as regards matriculation." This motion was not seconded and it therefore lapsed. Prior to rising for the day, the board was considering the question of establishing a diploma in education or of allowing candidates to take honours in education. This question will bo further considered to-day.
